Roofing and solar-ready work

Replace the roof once, with the panels in mind

One inspection looks at the roof and the solar side together. One permit. One dated sheet with every warranty start. Reno, Sparks and the Truckee Meadows.

One job, one calendar

From the first look to the last warranty date

Roof and panels run as one project with one point of contact.

  1. Visit

    Step 1: One inspection

We walk the ground, the roof, the attic and the array in one visit: shingle age, deck, ventilation, mount points and wiring runs. You keep one set of photos.

  2. Permit

    Step 2: One permit

We file the roof permit with the city or county, with the mount layout attached. If the array has to be disconnected, your solar company's electrician files that part, and both dates go on one calendar.

  3. Roof

    Step 3: The roof

Tear-off, deck check, underlayment, edge metal and shingles. Most homes this size take one to three days. Bad deck is priced by the sheet, in writing, before we start.

  4. Panels

    Step 4: The panels

New mounts go in flashed and laid out with your solar company. If panels are already up, they come off and go back on the new roof, and every mount is flashed again.

  5. Sign-off

    Step 5: The sign-off

The inspector looks at the roof. We walk the finished roof with you and photograph every flashing.

  6. Warranty

    Step 6: One dated sheet

When our workmanship warranty starts, when the manufacturer's warranty is registered, and the dates your solar company's own terms begin, all on one page.

Three common jobs

What three common jobs include

For a one-story home with about 24 squares of asphalt roof and one layer to remove.

  • Roof only

Tear-off to ridge cap, with crew labor and the permit.

    • Tear-off and disposal
    • Deck check, bad sheets priced per sheet
    • Underlayment, ice barrier at the eaves, drip edge
    • Architectural shingles, starter and ridge
    • Flashing, vents and pipe boots
    • Permit and plan check
  • Roof, solar-ready

The roof plus flashed mounting blocks, laid out with your solar company.

    • Tear-off and disposal
    • Deck check, bad sheets priced per sheet
    • Underlayment, ice barrier at the eaves, drip edge
    • Architectural shingles, starter and ridge
    • Flashing, vents and pipe boots
    • Permit and plan check
    • Flashed mounting blocks and a rafter map
    • Photos for your installer
  • Roof, panels reset

The roof plus 14 panels detached and reset on it.

    • Tear-off and disposal
    • Deck check, bad sheets priced per sheet
    • Underlayment, ice barrier at the eaves, drip edge
    • Architectural shingles, starter and ridge
    • Flashing, vents and pipe boots
    • Permit and plan check
    • 14 panels detached and reset, roof side
    • Every old mount flashed again

Example only. Your estimate lists every line and the home size it is based on. Decking is billed per sheet at the price written in it, and only for sheets replaced. The electrician's disconnect and reconnect of panels is billed by your solar company.

Why the roof comes first

Panels last for decades. The roof under them should too.

Taking panels off a worn roof later means paying for a detach and reset twice. If your roof has under about ten years left, replace it before the array goes up.

  • The roof's age and remaining life, in writing

  • Mounting points marked before the shingles go down

  • Attic ventilation checked, since heat shortens a roof's life

  • Fire rating of each product listed on the estimate

Homeowners

What past customers say

“The estimate had the deck price per sheet written down, and the crew stuck to it. They moved our panels and put them back the same week.”

Gerhard L.Re-roof with panels reset, Sparks

“One person handled the permit and called our solar company about the dates. We did not have to carry messages between them.”

Noura H.Re-roof, Reno

Questions

Questions homeowners ask

How long does a roof last in Reno?

Architectural asphalt shingles are commonly rated for 25 to 30 years. Strong sun, big temperature swings and winter freeze and thaw can shorten that. Your estimate states the expected life of the product on your roof.

Should I replace the roof before I add solar?

If the roof has under about ten years left, many roofers advise replacing it first, so the panels do not have to come off again. We write the roof's remaining life in the inspection report so you can decide.

Can the panels stay up during a re-roof?

No. The panels and racking come off, the roof is replaced, and the mounts are flashed again before the panels go back. Your solar company's electrician disconnects and reconnects the array.

What warranty do I get?

Two parts. The manufacturer's material warranty covers the product, and our workmanship warranty covers our installation. The terms of each, and who registers it, are written on your warranty sheet.

What about wildfire?

Homes near brush or open land can ask for fire-rated roofing and ember-resistant vents. Fire rules differ by county and neighborhood, so your estimate lists the fire rating of each product on it.

Do you handle insurance claims?

No. You decide whether to file, you deal with your insurer, and your deductible stays yours. We inspect, photograph and write an itemized estimate you can share with your insurer. If you ask, we can meet your adjuster at the house.
